Decomposing Aggregate Energy Intensity and Analyzing Sectoral Trends in Algeria (1990–2020)
Abstract. This study analyzes aggregate energy intensity (EI) in Algeria from 1990 to 2020 using the Fisher Ideal Index within the Index Decomposition Analysis (IDA) framework. The IDA is conducted with both primary and final energy consumption and is complemented by an analysis of sectoral trends to provide additional insights. The results indicate that the increase in EI is mainly driven by the energy inefficiency effect, while structural changes—particularly the shift toward the tertiary sector—contribute to reducing EI. Differences between the two cases are primarily associated with the energy industries and non-energy use sectors, as well as the industrial and tertiary sectors. These findings suggest that energy efficiency policies should prioritize the transport, residential, energy industries and non-energy use sectors, which remain the most energy-intensive.
