Ontological and Epistological Approach to the Study of Toponyms

Used in the "Detailed Notebook of Tbilisi Province"

Abstract

In the article, the possibilities of an ontological and epistemological approach to toponyms found in the "Detailed notebook of Tbilisi province" are analyzed. The emergence of different approaches and directions in the study of toponyms, and the application of different research methods in this field, are considered to be steps taken in the direction of overcoming existing problems. Socio-linguistic factors affecting the formation of toponyms are primarily influenced by issues related to the ethnic composition of the population living in a certain area, what historical, cultural, and social transformations that have occurred in this area. Toponyms are an important part of the cultural and philosophical perception of the life of any ethnic group, because they combine social and historical experience – universal and national experience, store and reflect cultural information, live. Ontologically important factors in the study of toponyms from a linguistic point of view include the belonging to different ethnic groups of those in contact.

Historically, a stable group of people with common values, such as a common language and cultural-psychological environment, in a certain area, does not remain unaffected by the formation of the semantic features of toponyms. The toponyms, which have developed historically and undergone certain changes over time, reflect concepts related to all areas of human life and activity. When approached from this point of view, the study of toponyms is possible on the basis of a complex approach that includes cognitive, linguocultural, anthropocentric, and historical-contactological paradigms.
