Phonological Processes in Rare Languages:
Challenges and Preservation Strategies

Abstract. The phonological system of endangered languages reflects their sound structures and how these structures function within the language. The phonology of these languages is closely tied to both internal factors (such as structure and phonemic system) and external factors (such as social and cultural changes, and the extent of language dissemination). Although rare languages often exhibit high phonetic diversity, their phonological features are frequently endangered. Factors limiting the natural development of these languages include a narrowing domain of use, contact with dominant languages, and the absence of a written form. The number and composition of phonemes in rare languages can be either smaller or more complex compared to other languages. At the same time, unusual phonetic phenomena—such as tone, stress, vowel shifts, or non-standard sound usage—are widely observed. These characteristics are key elements distinguishing rare languages, yet as live usage declines, these features face the risk of extinction. Due to intercultural influence and the dominance of more widespread languages, the sound structures of rare languages may gradually change, weakening their original phonological elements. In some cases, native speakers adopt the phonological features of other languages, leading to the gradual loss of distinct phonemes or subtle sound differences in their mother tongues. Furthermore, many rare languages lack a writing system, making the intergenerational transmission of phonological characteristics more difficult.
