Semantic Features of Verb Conjunction
Abstract
In Azerbaijani grammar, verb conjunctions play a crucial role in linking two or more actions within complex syntactic structures. These conjunctions, which are non-independent and subordinate, provide additional meanings to the main verb, either completing or elaborating on it. Azerbaijani verb conjunctions are characterized by their rich system of morphemes, which allow for various grammatical nuances in the language. Among them, the suffix -ıb⁴ is particularly significant due to its broad semantic scope. It conveys meanings related to state, manner of action, cause, and time, with some overlapping in its usage with other conjunctions like -araq². These suffixes are distinguished not only by their meanings but also by their stylistic use in different contexts, such as in formal written language versus everyday speech. Furthermore, some verb conjunctions in Azerbaijani exhibit synonymic relationships, especially when the meanings are similar, even though the forms differ in usage and stylistic register.
