The Literary Structure of Magical Elements in the Work of John Fowles
Abstract
The article is devoted to the features of the manifestation of the problem of magical realism in the artistic consciousness of the 20th century and the study of this method in the context of the description of historical, love, psychological and spiritual qualities in the work of John Fowles. The assessment of antique images and mythological motifs in the novels “The Magus” and “Mantissa” in the work of John Fowles as a feature of the manifestation of magical realism is considered as a problem of research. In these novels, magical realism is a means of finding miracles in the mundaneness of life, of giving meaning to the idea-content layer of works, of describing the personal qualities of characters, the richness of their spiritual worlds in a more colorful, natural and lively way. At the same time, it is analyzed how John Fowles’ magical realism has become a means of showing the impossible moments of reality, the repetition of existential problems in different periods of history, and how this approach influenced his literary heritage.
