The Main Causes of Contradictions
in the Russia-Ukraine war
Chingiz Mammadzadeh
Abstract. This article provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the main causes of contradictions within the Russia-Ukraine War. The primary objective of the study is to identify and evaluate the political, economic, military, and ideological factors that have contributed to the emergence and escalation of the conflict. Particular attention is paid to the geopolitical vacuum that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the shifting balance of power in the region, and Russia’s efforts to maintain its sphere of influence. At the same time, Ukraine’s aspirations toward European integration and its increasing cooperation with NATO have intensified Russia’s security concerns. Energy security and competition over transit routes have further deepened economic tensions between the parties. Additionally, issues of national identity, language, and cultural orientation have contributed to internal divisions within Ukrainian society. The study demonstrates that the conflict is not merely a regional dispute but a complex phenomenon involving the intersection of global power interests. In the modern system of international relations, regional conflicts have a significant impact on the global security architecture. In this regard, the Russia-Ukraine War is not merely a confrontation between two states, but also an indicator of the transformation of the international system. The roots of the conflict have been shaped at the intersection of history, politics, and economics.
Furthermore, the article evaluates the broader implications of the conflict for international security and considers its potential long-term consequences within the evolving global order.
