Armenians' Territorial Claims Against Azerbaijan and Heydar Aliyev's Activities in Protecting the Territorial Integrity of Azerbaijan
Abstract
In 1920, when the armenians seized control of the Zangazur region of Azerbaijan, they made attempts to annex Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia in 1921. Nariman Narimanov prevented the realization of this intention. However, after N. Narimanov was transferred to Moscow at the end of 1922, in July 1923, Nagorno-Karabakh was granted the status of an autonomous region. In this regard, the Armenian side did not give up its claims on Garabagh and continued to raise this issue again at various times. As a result of Nariman Narimanov's principled position and consistent activity, a special decision was adopted at the meeting of the Caucasus Bureau of the Russian Communist (Bolshevik) Party on July 5, 1921. In that decision, it was considered expedient to maintain Nagorno-Karabakh within the Azerbaijan SSR, taking into account the need to ensure national peace between Muslims and Armenians living in the region, to preserve the existing economic ties between Upper and Lower Garabagh, as well as the importance of Garabagh's historical and geographical ties with Azerbaijan.
