Attitudes Toward Flowers in Poetic Language

Abstract

The article “Attitude Towards Flowers in Poetic Language” is devoted to examining the semantic, stylistic, and symbolic functions of flower names (phytonyms) in literary texts. The main aim of the study is to determine that in poetic discourse, flowers function not only as nominal words but also as images and symbols carrying aesthetic and emotional significance. The article demonstrates that in poetic language, flower names acquire new semantic nuances through metaphorization, symbolization, and personification.

The study substantiates that flowers, enriched with culturally established associations in the collective memory, are reinterpreted in poetry through individual authorial style, becoming an integral part of the poetic imagery system. Several key functions of flowers are identified in the research.

In both classical and contemporary poetry, flower names used in various contexts serve as symbols of love, respect and beauty, modesty, separation, and longing, performing symbolic, emotional-expressive, and metaphorical functions that enhance the richness of depiction, the expressive power of the text, and the comparison of human character or life stages. Examples from Azerbaijani classical and modern poetry confirm that the flower image carries national and cultural codes. In particular, in classical Eastern poetry, the rose-nightingale motif functions as one of the primary means of expressing the philosophy of love, whereas in contemporary poetry, flowers more often symbolize individual emotions and socio-spiritual concerns.

The study concludes that the attitude toward flowers in poetic language is not limited to natural description; it also reflects the human inner world, aesthetic perceptions, and national-cultural values. The semantic transformation of flower names expands the expressive potential of language and enhances the expressiveness of poetic texts. Thus, the article analyzes the functional-semantic characteristics of phytonyms in poetic language, determining their artistic and aesthetic value and their position within the lexical-semantic system of the language.
