Development of Apple Production in the World and in Azerbaijan
Abstract
Today, the number of apple varieties in the world exceeds 6,500 and in Azerbaijan there are over 300. However, among them, the number of those with high quality and productivity and those grown commercially is very small. Although there are up to 300 different types and varieties of apples in Azerbaijan, 60 of them are important for industry. The advantage of apples over other fruits is that they can be used all year round. The ripening period of apples includes autumn (September, October), summer (July, August), winter (November-February). Depending on the variety and type of apple, its taste, color and aroma vary. Guba region is considered the main apple growing region in Azerbaijan. Various types of apples are grown here. Recently, seedlings of Fuji, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Conocold, Rhine Rennet and White Rennet varieties have been planted here in a 24-hectare apple orchard.
