Estimation of Biomass in the Summer Pastures of Kalbajar District
Based on Multispectral Satellite Imagery
Abstract
The aim of this study is to assess the condition of vegetation cover and estimate the amount of grass biomass in the summer pastures of the Kalbajar district using satellite imagery. Landsat 8–9 OLI TIRS satellite images were utilized in the research. A vegetation index was calculated to analyze vegetation dynamics, and its relationship with biomass was determined. An empirical formula based on vegetation index values was applied for biomass estimation, and the results were visualized using GIS-based software.
The study also included an analysis of the area's topographic features based on a digital elevation model (DEM), examining the relationship between vegetation cover and topographic factors such as elevation and slope.
As a result of the analysis, both active vegetation zones and relatively degraded areas in the summer pastures were identified. These findings serve as an important scientific basis for the sustainable management of Kalbajar's summer pastures, regulation of grazing pressure, and preservation of grass cover.
