Genre Transformations in Modern Russian Prose
(using the example of V. Astafiev’s parable “Elchik-belchik”)
Abstract
The article examines the issue of genre transformation in Russian prose at the turn of the XX–XXI centuries. In the process of genre transformations, new modifications emerge. The process of genre transformation is associated with the formation of new artistic forms and structures. Such modifications represent a development of traditional genres: although certain elements of the earlier model are preserved, changes occur due to the reinterpretation or loss of key characteristics. Based on V. Astafyev’s parable “Elchik-belchik”, the article traces the renewal of the genre nature of the literary work in Russian literature of the late XX – early XXI century is traced. The study analyzes various techniques – direct orientation toward oral speech, dialogue featuring characters’ distinctive speech, free indirect speech, inner speech and others. These techniques function as a subjectivization of the author’s narration and, at the same time, make the image of the author-narrator more clearly defined. The features identified in Astafyev’s parable vividly demonstrate the departure from traditional genre norms and canons.
