Punctuation Marks Used In Azerbaijan Writing
Abstract
Punctuation marks are a system of graphic signs that serve to purposefully regulate written speech. Spelling rules and punctuation marks are considered the constitution of written speech as they play a fundamental role for language.
Punctuation marks in the modern Azerbaijani language are studied in the punctuation section of linguistics. Punctuation is a word of Latin origin (punktum) and means point in Azerbaijani language.
Despite the fact that punctuation marks were discovered after writing and the alphabet, they are as important as writing in linguistics. For this reason, in most linguistic literature, punctuation marks are valued as the second alphabet for mankind.
Researchers associate the creation of punctuation marks with the name of the philosopher Aristophanes, who lived in 450-385 BC. However, the graphic signs used by both Aristophanes and his contemporaries in writing differed in content and form from the current punctuation marks, and mainly served to express a paragraph and a point.
