Semantic Changes in English Phraseological Units
Abstract
The article examines the semantic changes occurring in English phraseological units. Although the semantic stability of phraseological units is considered one of their main features, as a result of the dynamic development of the language, these units are subject to various semantic transformations. The study analyzes processes such as semantic expansion, contraction, metaphorical and metonymic changes, as well as contextual reinterpretation. The study, based on modern English language materials, shows how phraseological units change functionally and semantically in new communicative conditions. The article is important in terms of studying the mechanisms of semantic development of phraseology.
