Shamakhi Friday Mosque: a Place Where History and Art Meet

Abstract

The article reflects the rich historical period and architectural features of the Shamakhi Juma Mosque, one of the most beautiful pearls of Azerbaijan's cultural and spiritual heritage. The article presents the Shamakhi Juma Mosque not only as a religious place of worship but also as a living symbol of the history, cultural heritage, and art of the Azerbaijani people. Throughout history, Shamakhi has been known as one of Azerbaijan's most tolerant regions. Various religions, sects, and denominations have coexisted here. The Juma Mosque is one of the most striking examples showcasing the ancient tradition of tolerance in the city. Built in the 8th century, this mosque has endured earthquakes, attacks, and fires throughout history and has been restored multiple times. The monument was built using limestone, following the traditions of the Shirvan-Absheron architectural style. Reconstruction works were carried out in different years under the leadership of the prominent Azerbaijani architect Ziver bey Ahmadbeyov and the Polish architect Jozef Kasprowicz Plosko, while preserving the mosque's original structure. The latest restoration of the building was completed in 2013, and its foundation was reinforced with 1-meter-deep concrete structures to ensure resistance to earthquakes. Thus, new life was given to this majestic structure. The three mihrabs present in the Shamakhi Juma Mosque make it unique in the world.
