Some Phytochemical Properties of Extracts Obtained from
Melissa Officinalis Plant

Abstract

Melissa officinalis-also known as medicinal balm is a medicinal plant widely used in medical practice and scientific research due to its rich composition and numberous important properties. This plant has been utilazed for various purposes since ancient times, thanks to the presence of various biologically active substances in its composition. In this article we determined the presence of biologically active molecules such as saponins, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, glycosides, quinones, coumarins and tannins in the homogenate, ethanol and aqueous extract of Melissa officinalis leaves using a test method. Different percentage solutions of iron salt, sulfuric acid, KOH, NaOH solutions and ultraviolet rays were utilized to detect these compounds. It was discovered that all of the a forementioned compounds are present in the extracts obtained from the Melissa officinalis plant, as evidenced by color changes in the extracts. Thus, the experimental results confirmend presence of saponins, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, glycosides, quinones and tannins in the aqueous extract of the plant, and glycosides, phenols, flavonoids, quinones and tannins in the ethanol extract. Furthermore, the presence of saponins, phenolic compounds and tannins in the homogenate obtained from Melissa officinalis plant was also established.
