The Ecological Burden of Azerbaijan’s Transport Sector and Perspectives of Green Transport

Abstract

Although the transport sector holds a critical position in Azerbaijan’s economic growth, its environmental consequences increasingly require focused attention. While rapid expansion of transport infrastructure drives economic progress, it simultaneously exacerbates challenges such as carbon emissions, noise pollution, inefficient land use, and ecosystem degradation. Additionally, implementing recycling systems, integrating environmental standards into urban planning, and adopting alternative energy sources (e.g., wind and solar power) are integral to achieving sustainable outcomes. Analysis indicates that transitioning to eco-friendly transport systems not only mitigates environmental harm but also generates long-term economic advantages. Improved energy efficiency, increased foreign investment, and the creation of healthier living environments collectively enhance societal well-being. Ultimately, Azerbaijan’s ecological transport strategy must align with its socio-economic development objectives for 2030 and harmonize with global green trends. A holistic approach, combining technological innovation, regulatory reforms, and heightened public consciousness, will enable the nation to safeguard its natural resources while maintaining economic competitiveness. This integrated vision underscores that ecological sustainability in transport is not merely an environmental obligation but a strategic imperative for enduring prosperity.
