The History of the Formation of the Azerbaijani National Press and the Newspaper “Ekinchi”
Abstract
The national press in our country was established in 1875. Our first press was founded by Hasan bey Zardabi, who had great services in the field of literature. The very naming of the newspaper “Ekinchi” was intended to prevent censorship. Because the empire would not allow the creation of a newspaper with socio-political purposes in a Muslim country, to educate people, and to demand their rights. It is known that at that time, in the nineteenth century, enlightenment began to develop to a certain extent. The teaching of the native language was carried out in the first schools. M.F.Akhundzadeh, S.A.Shirvani had more services in this field.
In S.Unsizadeh's school, along with teaching Sharia and Islamic history, secular sciences were also taught. H.Zardabi, N.Vazirov, S.M.Ganizadeh made a great effort in implementing such newtype schools. These and other enlightened intellectuals decided to create a model of the press for the education of the Azerbaijani people, workers and peasants. Because there was a need for such a newspaper in the native language for the education of the people and for them to understand their rights. That first native-language press was “Ekinchi”.
