The Influence of the Catholic Church on the Social and
Spiritual Life of Poles
Abstract
This article analyzes the influence of the Polish Catholic Church on the identity of the Polish nation and the reasons for the close connection between them throughout Polish history from the 19th to the 21st centuries. The Church's ability to influence politics, the continued near-universal religiosity and even its growth, and the very intensity of debates about the Church's place in society clearly indicate that the Church's role in public life remains significant. Today, the Church in Poland actively functions as a public institution, and it is premature to speak of a weakening of the Roman Catholic Church's influence in Poland; perhaps it is merely an emerging trend toward weakening. Thus, the stereotype of the “Pole-Catholic” still applies to contemporary Polish society.
