The Mirror of His Age-the Image of Truth — Seyid Azim Shirvani
Abstract
The article provides a comprehensive study of the life and creative work of Seyid Azim Shirvani, a prominent figure of nineteenth-century Azerbaijani literature, enlightener, poet, and pedagogue. His literary heritage is examined in the context of the socio-political and cultural environment of the period, with emphasis on its significance both for national literature and for universal human values. The research analyzes Shirvani’s poetry in three major directions: the continuation of classical poetic traditions, the development of enlightenment-oriented satire, and the strengthening of moral-didactic themes. The study also explores Shirvani’s connection with the newspaper Ekinchi, his publications, and his role in the national enlightenment movement. Thus, Seyid Azim’s poetry is shown to combine aesthetic value with the function of promoting enlightenment ideals. The analysis confirms that Seyid Azim Shirvani was not only a continuer of classical traditions but also one of the founders of Azerbaijani enlightenment realism.
