The Problem of Constructing a Political Paradigm in Muslim Thought
Erdoğan Köycü1* , Mustafa Özden1
Abstract. Our research will focus on the problem of conceiving and constructing a political paradigm, which is the most important dilemma of Muslim thought. We will evaluate the traditional political conceptions of Muslims that have emerged throughout the historical process, beginning with the death of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Solving problems first requires identifying and examining their root causes. If we fail to accurately diagnose the problems, we will not only fail to solve them but will also become part of the problem. Naturally, politics constitutes only a part of individual and social life, not the whole. To conceive of politics as encompassing all of life is contrary to the nature of political thought. Such a way of thinking would harm all values outside the political sphere. In this context, when discussing religion and politics, it is important to note that although they appear separate, these concepts, which are in fact interconnected in a vibrant and intricate network, point to two crucial dimensions of individual and societal reality. Both religion and politics are human phenomena that, in their own dimensions and planes, exert a decisive influence on the social, political, and economic structures that shape the individual and society. Both phenomena fulfill their respective missions in the writing of history. On the contrary, they pave the way for an increase in problems related to these issues in individual and social life, leading to insolubility and chaos.
