Injuries around the world are growing steadily, causing enormous social and economic damage to society. Injury is the leading cause of death for residents between the ages of 1 and 45. More than a third of all road traffic fatalities and nearly eighty percent of completed suicides are alcohol-related. Alcohol can be both a cause of injury and an interfering factor in the diagnosis and treatment of an injured patient. It has been well established that drinking alcohol increases the risk of a traumatic event as well as worsens overall health. Fortunately, short-term intervention after alcohol-related injuries has been shown to reduce both injury recurrence and long-term alcohol use. This study examined the epidemiology of alcohol-related injury, the effect of alcohol on mortality and other outcomes, and the role of alcohol-related injury prevention in the clinical setting.
