LAWS AND REGULATIONS IN THE CONTIGUOUS ZONE
Summary
The modern contiguous zone is the result of the coming together of different kinds of claim to maritime jurisdiction definable in State practice. Confusion about exactly what enforcement operations can lawfully be carrying out by coastal states against foreign ships in the zone has existed from its creation in 1958.
