Integration of the Perception and Syntax of Spatial

Adpositions in English

Abstract

The use of spatial adpositions in the English language encompasses a multifaceted system ranging from the mechanisms of spatial perception in the human brain to syntactic structures, semantic features, and discourse-internal referential functions. Theories such as Scene Geometry, Figure–Ground, Geometry + Functionalism, trajectory-based approaches, and conceptual metaphor studies demonstrate that spatial prepositions possess not only grammatical but also cognitive foundations. These units are capable of encoding physical space as well as abstract and discursive relations.
