Məqalədə söz sırası cümlənin məqsəd və intonasiyaya görə növləri üzərində nəzərdən keçirilir. Dildə söz sırası dedikdə dili, nitqi təşkil edən sözlərin müəyyən bir qanunauyğunluq əsasında düzülməsi nəzərdə tutulur. Bu qanunauyğunluq hər bir dilin daxili qanunlarına əsasən formalaşır. Söz sırası bütün sintaktik vahidlərdə ən mühüm xüsusiyyətlərdəndir. Cümlədə söz sırası cümlənin qrammatik üzvlənmə elementlərinin cümlə üzvlərinin müəyyən bir qaydaya əsasən düzülməsidir. Söz sırası cümlənin kommunikativ xarakterini müəyyənləşdirməkdə aparıcı rol oynayır. Cümlənin kommunikativ xarakteri danışanın cümlədən hansı məqsədlə istifadə etməsini nəzərdə tutur və bu məqsəddən asılı olaraq söz sırası pozula bilər. Danışıq dilində söz sırası demək olar ki, danışanın iradəsindən asılıdır və sərbəstdir. Amma bu sərbəstlik fikrin anlaşılmasında çətinlik yaratmamalıdır.
