Big Data in International Media: Exploring Working Mechanisms
Abstract
Big data refers to a combination of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data that organizations collect, analyze, and assimilate to gain information and insights. In fact, big data is applied across various fields, including machine learning projects, predictive modeling, and advanced analytics applications. It is impossible to imagine data journalism—an emerging trend in the global media system—without big data, which serves as its foundation. Data is the raw material for data journalism products, and all subsequent processes, including collection and filtering, are built upon it. Journalists and news organizations aim to understand, leverage, and extract value from big data by exploring algorithms, calculations, and quantifications. The development of big data has significant implications for journalism. With access to big data, it becomes possible to create valuable data journalism products. Professional data journalism specialists need a diverse skill set encompassing information technology, mathematics, and creativity. To achieve this, a clear understanding of the nature of big data is essential. This article discusses the importance of big data in media, its various types, and the methods of utilizing it effectively.
