Factors Requiring Regulation of Social Networks and Possible Solutions

Abstract

Recently, social media platforms, despite their many advantages, have become the subject of criticism, dissatisfaction, and frustration. The main complaints are directly or indirectly related to media ethics, or cases involving mass violations of ethics. We have been witnessing the rapid transformation of the rules and mass communication codes that were previously established over decades of governance. Today, these changes occur quickly and dramatically, affecting our lives and thought patterns. These processes indicate that some of the changes have been  brought about by social media can create insecurity and confusion in societies due to their unpredictability. Doubtless this situation raises concerns for governments as well. As a result, some countries have begun regulating social media, and we are seeing this process become more widespread. Several countries have initiated their own methods and/or models for regulating social media, and some have even decided to close specific platforms, such as TikTok. The research seeks answer to these questions like: Do global and local measures taken to regulate social media improve the existing situation in societies? How useful are these trends for global application? How will the creation of ‘new regulations for social media’ affect our trust in these platforms?
