Sufi Clothing Terms and Their Symbolic Meanings in Nasimi's Creativity
Abstract
In the Middle Ages, clothing types had symbolic meanings in Sufi sects, and in rituals, the wearing of outerwear belonging to the poor class by sheikhs and murids played the role of means of expressing the ideological way of thinking, such as to be modest bringing up one's desires and achieving spiritual wealth, and surrendering to God. In Nasimi's work, this approach was reflected in the creation of artistic contrasts between the lexical units of gaba, atlas, and saqarlat, which were presented as indicators of worldly adornment and luxury, and poor clothing and fabric types such as aba, khirga, kepanek, and shawl. Here, along with common words such as dress, boots, cloak, and robe, terms with special symbolic meaning in Sufism are encountered: cübbə, qəba, xirqə, əba, zərq, ətləspuş, pəşminəpuş, səqərlat, ətləs, şal, kəpənək, tac, dəstar, külah, teyləsan, kəmər, zünnar.
In his research, the author identified 20 types of sectarian clothing in his work and divided them into 5 paradigmatic divisions: 1) Names of 8 outerwear types: robes, cübbə, qəba, xirqə, əba, zərq, kəpənək, don, libas; 2) Names of 5 fabric types: ətləs, ətləspuş, pəşminəpuş, səqərlat, şal; 3) Names of head 4 covering types: tac, dəstar, külah, teyləsan; 4) Types of belts 2 pieces: kəmər, zünnar; 5) Type of 1 shoes piece: çəkmə. Each of these terms is analyzed in the article.
