The Influence of a Multicultural Society on the Emotional
Education of the Younger Generation of Various
Ethnocultural Backgrounds
Abstract
In societies that are becoming increasingly multicultural, children of different ethnocultural backgrounds face different emotional socialization practices that reflect their cultural heritage, peer groups, and broader societal influences. This article examines how a multicultural environment shapes emotional education, that is, the development of emotional competence, regulation, self-expression, and empathy, among young generations from different ethnocultural groups. Drawing on theories of cultural psychology, socialization of emotions, acculturation, and models of ecological systems, the article identifies the mechanisms by which a multicultural context promotes both opportunities (such as a broader emotional repertoire, intercultural empathy) and problems (such as cultural dissonance, identity conflicts, and divergent emotional norms). In addition, the article examines the pedagogical and political aspects of supporting emotional education in various settings: culturally sensitive curricula, family-school partnerships, and inclusive emotional education programs. The article concludes with suggestions for future research and practice in the field of multicultural emotional education.
