The Symbolism of the Sun and Horizon in Afzaladdin Khagani’s Poetry
Abstract
This article examines landscape descriptions in the works of the great Eastern poet Afzaladdin Khagani within various contexts. Recognized as a master of beautiful imagery in Eastern literature and referred to as the “Poet of Dawn” Khagani’s poetic depictions of “Dawn” and the “Horizon” are analyzed within the framework of Azerbaijani literary studies, highlighting their similarities and differences. The author refers to the original texts of Khagani’s poetry to present an accurate interpretation of the poet’s figurative expressions. The cosmological and mythological layers in many of his poems are thoroughly explored, with a particular focus on his work “Address to the Sun”, which is linked to archaic elements of subconscious thought within the framework of mythopoetic tradition. The presence of ethno cosmic substrates in his works, passed down through literary heritage, is also identified. The poet had a profound sensitivity to nature, masterfully portraying its beauty in his works. The theoretical analysis of the landscape descriptions in the poetry of 12th-century Shirvan poets reveals the delicate features of Azerbaijani nature.
