Abstract. This article examines the use of the Azerbaijani tar in chamber orchestras, focusing on its timbral characteristics, performance techniques, and potential functions within orchestral texture. The study addresses the relationship between traditional Azerbaijani instrumental practice and the compositional principles of chamber orchestration. Its aim is to identify the artistic roles the tar can fulfil in a chamber ensemble and the technical and interpretative considerations that influence its integration. The research draws on historical and comparative analysis, a review of musicological literature, and an analytical synthesis of orchestration principles. The theoretical framework includes Uzeyir Hajibeyli’s work on Azerbaijani musical modes, studies by Malik Guliyev and Sahib Pashazade on the tar in Azerbaijani composers’ works, and orchestration literature by Samuel Adler and Walter Piston. The analysis suggests that the tar can function as a solo instrument, carry a principal melodic line, participate in timbral contrasts, or contribute to ensemble texture. Its effective use, however, requires careful consideration of register, dynamics, articulation, intonation, and balance with other instruments. The article contributes a conceptual framework for understanding how the tar’s traditional expressive resources may be integrated into chamber-orchestral writing.
