What Should Children Pay Attention to When Choosing the Type of Sport
Abstract
Historically, children have been divided into age groups in order to develop physical qualities in
children. The division of children into age groups in the process of education has been carried out in
various ways by various scientists.
In modern times, due to the development and diversification of sports and the sharp differences
in the training of these sports, it is of great importance at what age a child starts to engage in which
sport.
However, this age division has recently required changes. Because the problem of acceleration
has begun to manifest itself in recent times. Acceleration derived from Latin (akselerosiyo). It means
the acceleration of physical and mental development in childhood. Therefore, when involving
children in sports sections, the age divisions that existed in previous years should be reviewed.
Taking into account the age, weight, anthropometric measurements, physiological development,
psychological state, and enthusiasm of children, it may be more beneficial to use the gradual principle
in choosing a sport for children. Children should be selected not once, but several times in stages and
directed to sports activities according to the above parameters. Since the formation of bones in
children at the age of 7-8 and the process of approaching the bones of adults in similarity occurs,
sports that require a lot of jumping movements and agility, such as basketball, handball, and running
and long jump, can be recommended as the chosen sport. In the period of 8-12 years, the development
of all organs and systems in children and adolescents continues. Ossification of bones and muscle
development accelerates, and by the age of 12, bones are no longer distinguishable from adult bones.
At this stage, sports that require agility, dexterity, reaction speed, attention, and psychological
endurance, such as judo, football, table tennis, and badminton, can be recommended as suitable sports
for children. These sports help develop physical and mental abilities necessary for future growth and
development.
