The Impact of Mega Events on Tourism Flows Across Regions and
the Problems of Income Differentiation
Abstract
Mega events have significant but varied impacts on tourism flows. This study analyzes how mega events affect tourist arrivals and the distribution of tourism income across regions. A comparative approach is used, examining global examples and Azerbaijan’s experience from 2010 to 2024. Statistical data on international tourist arrivals before, during, and after select mega events are analyzed alongside literature insights. Results indicate that mega events typically boost international tourist inflows to host destinations in the short term, though the magnitude depends on the event type, timing, and context. The study finds that while mega events can enhance a country’s image and overall visitor numbers, they may also exacerbate regional disparities in tourism revenue distribution. Strategies such as spreading event activities to multiple regions and promoting broader travel itineraries are discussed to mitigate inequality. The findings underscore the importance of strategic planning to ensure mega event legacies contribute to balanced regional tourism development rather than deepening existing divides.
